How to Build a Brand in ANcient ROme

Dr Monique Webber, University of Melbourne

A strong personal brand was everything in Ancient Rome. Your reputation, that of your family and of your city was equally as important as actions in securing fame, glory, and Empire. And you conveyed that brand not only through possessing and displaying objects, but also by your own appearance.

When we think of objects in the ancient world, we usually focus on how they were used. But what about the international industry of designers, manufacturers, and retailers who fuelled Rome’s need for conspicuous consumption? This will be the often-untold story of marketing in Ancient Rome, and the lessons it holds for us today.

The streets of Rome were a giant exhibition – with more at stake than a few bad reviews.
